Eighteen days after having my knee replaced . . . I felt strong enough to go out birding. A Canvasback, a relatively rare visitor to Maine, has been seen regularly at nearby Damariscotta Mills.
We saw all the usual winter birds . . . all three Mergansers, Eagles, Black Duck and Mallards . . . but no Canvasback.
The bird at the top of the page was looking down on the Mills and I assumed it was a Red-tailed Hawk (and the initial version of this post said as much). After reviewing the photo (and a number of unpublished photos), I’m going to revise and extend . . . it’s a rare (for January) Red-shouldered Hawk.
It was good to be outside again.
