What do I do on a warm Christmas Eve morning? I drive an hour to the Hatch Hill Landfill in Augusta, Maine in search of a Juvenile Golden Eagle being seen there.
The Augusta “Dump” is known for a large number of Bald Eagles that congregate during the winter but I was unprepared for the sheer numbers. I estimated 40 but the day before 60+ were counted.
I spent the 30 minutes birders are allowed on the facility trying to make every Bald into a Golden . . . but in the end my first Golden Eagle in Maine will have to wait for another day.
