Miami Exotics

Blue-and-Yellow Macaws

Yesterday, Ingrid and I toured the Miami, Florida area looking for Exotic Birds.  Generally speaking, exotics are species brought to the United States from South America or Asia as pets.  They escaped (or were released) . . . met up with a similar exotic of the opposite sex . . . and had babies. Many of these are parakeets and macaws – brightly colored, striking birds.

These birds eventually established a breeding community and became “countable.”

Blue-crowned Parakeet

These exotic populations can be hard to find . . . especially if you’re visiting Miami from Maine.

I was in Miami this week as well. I was surprised to see parakeets out and about ‘in the wild’
